To continue building a City of Hope that is safer, cleaner and more resilient for our residents and natural systems, the City of Cape Town, along with many other cities around the world, has committed to being carbon neutral by 2050. In order to reach this ambitious and important goal, we all need to ACT in our homes and places of work to build a more sustainable future.
Buildings generate more than 50% of the city’s total greenhouse gas emissions, largely through their energy use. Driving radical energy efficiency towards net zero carbon buildings is a key focus area for the City, and achieving it is critical to reaching our energy and climate goals.
A net zero carbon building is one that produces as much energy as it consumes. This is achieved through reducing energy demand through good passive design; installing high efficiency lighting and power systems, including appliances; and by supplying the building’s energy needs from renewable sources.
